CG3 - Assignment 2 process

In assignment 2, we are given the task to create a motion-based poster with 15-20 seconds duration. Using the first assignment as the concept, the following are the process of making the poster done by me. This assignment is done in Adobe Flash Professional CS5.

At the beginning, I opened a file with the following size:

Next, I uploaded my PSD file containing Assignment 1 into the library by dragging it into the said panel.

I arranged all the transferred pictures onto the stage. Each picture is put into its respective layer.

In the timeline panel, I stretched the duration for all layers to frame 361 which is equivalent to 15 seconds. Next, I right-clicked on the stage and created motion tween for all the layers except for the black rectangles.

All the timeline bars turned into blue in color.

Now that all objects are able to be animated, I started the process with the background. The motion for this object is pretty simple. First, I went to Properties -> Color Effects -> Alpha and set the value to 0. The background object is no longer viewable. Secondly, I moved to several frames to the right and set the Alpha value back to 100.
Note that a black dot appeared at the frame where I set the Alpha value. This shows that a motion for the object is created.

Onto the next object which are black lines, the motion set for the object is pretty much similar with the background accept I added a dynamic movement on it. Starting from frame 81, I transformed the object into a very thin line.

Afterwards, I moved to frame 143 and transformed back the lines into its original form. Further on to frame 200, I made a little movement for the lines so that the pictures of food, which will be explained after this, fit into the area perfectly.

Moving on, working on the mentioned pictures, the motion done on both previous objects is applied and at the beginning of the motion, the picture is enlarged. Moved through some frames later, the pictures are transformed and made fit into the areas beside the black lines.

Next, focusing on the yellow, red and blue rings, each of the rings' motion started at different frame. Starting with the yellow ring, the object is moved to the top, outside of the stage.

Gaussian blur, one of the special effects is applied on the ring. The following is the blur value set for the object.

At frame 240, the value is now changed back to 0 and the ring is positioned at the middle of the stage.

The process for animating the ring is applied on the other rings accept the directions they are showed up from. Now, onto the nested animation process for the rings.

The nested animation is created by double-clicked on the ring. Now, entering the symbol-only mode, the object is set with motion tween. At a small interval of frames, I positioned the object at different locations.

The other rings are also applied with similar motion. Afterwards, back to normal mode, furthering on to the final object which is the type. Starting from frame 281, the type is reduced to a very small size. Towards frame 324, the type is enlarged to a much larger size than normal.

For the next couple few frames, the type is shrinked back again and finally, changed back to its usual size.

The animation is previewed by clicking ctrl + enter. It looked like the animation is looped. In order to get rid of this circumstance, a new layer is created and a keyframe is put at frame 361 where the animation should ended. Then, the keyframe is selcted and a panel called Action is opened.

There, the action script "stop();" is typed in within the scripting area.

The animation is previewed again and this time, the animation is no longer in loop.

So, I guess these are all the steps I have used for the assignment. Thanks for reading!

CG3 - Assignment 1 process.

A task of making a typography poster with a theme of 1 Malaysia is given to CG3 students. I chose food as the main subject for the poster. The following are the pictures used for the task.

-The Procedures-

At the beginning, I opened a file with the size of 2480 x 3508 with the resolution of 72.

A new layer which is renamed as 'background' is made and put within a folder called 'Backgrounds'.

The background layer is filled with yellow colour and a picture of a texture is inserted into the same folder as the layer. The fill of the texture layer is lowered down and its mode is changed to linear light.

The original picture of the texture which is downloaded from mayang.com

Then, I put some wordings 'sweets. sour. salty. spicy.' under the texture layer and its fill is also lowered down. This text layer is rasterized.

The following is the picture of the 'Background' folder.

New folder named as Graphics is created and a new layer containing an oval yellow ring is put into it. The ring is made with ellipse tool. Then, its layer mode is changed to 'Multiply'.

Same procedure is applied on the other rings except their layer modes remained 'Normal'.

Next, a pair of black rectangles are made. One of it is put at the upper part of the picture while the other is put at the lower part. The rectangles are made to make the poster looks a little dramatic.

Another new folder named as 'Pictures' is made and a couple of pictures of Malaysian food is put into it. These pictures had undergone a process of vectorization in Adobe Illustrator by using a tool called Livetrace. The pictures are then transferred to Photoshop. At first, the layers is labelled as 'Vector Smart Object' and the pictures cannot be edited while they are in that form. To enable the editing process on the pictures, I rasterized and merged the layers into one which is renamed as Malaysian Foods. Afterwards, the pictures are arranged vertically and made its position little bit slanted.

The previously mentioned layer is copied and the picture is put at the other side of the file.

Now that the pictures part is completed, here is the picture of the folder named as 'Pictures'.

A new layer renamed as 'Black lines' is made and put into 'Graphics' folder. 2 black lines is created and placed at the outline of the pictures.

'Graphics' folder is now completed. Here is the picture of it.

Lastly, a folder named as 'Type' is made. The typography, which is made in Adobe Illustrator, is tranferred into Photoshop and later rasterized. A layer style is inserted into the layer which is renamed as 'Type'.

The picture of the 'Type' folder.

Semestar 3

Semestar 3 is already began and we are currently learning about Adobe Flash, a software which allows us to design and animate things we would like to.

My first impression of Adobe Flash learning session:
It is quite confusing yet it is fun to learn. I hope to make my own original animation with the help of the knowledge I gained along the tutorial session.

Assignment 1 - Step by step

This post will feature methods and step-by-steps of making my e-wallpaper. The theme choosen for my e-wallpaper is Penang Dragon Boat festival. I chose this festival because I'm attracted to the boats design and would like to acknowledge people the existence of this festival. Please refer to my previous posts for more information regarding the festival. So, let's get started!

Below are the pictures choosen for the e-wallpaper.

I start the project by opening up a new file according to the project's specification, that is, A4 size.
The first step I would do is creating appropiate background for the e-wallpaper. What comes in my mind is oriental pattern and shapes on an old paper. So, I open up a file containing a texture of old paper, which is downloaded from mayang.com.
This is how the paper looks like. The paper is quite smaller than the original file size. Therefore, I used free transfrom or Ctrl + T on the paper and enlarge it until it has the same size with the file. And then, I downloaded an oriental pattern from dezignus.com and put the pattern into a new layer positioned above the layer containing the paper texture. The result looks like this:

The same method is used to resize the pattern. Afterwards, I clicked on the lock transparent pixel on the layer containing the pattern to recolour it with a new one.

Next, I lowered the opacity of the layer so that the pattern can blend well with the background. Now, onto the main part of the wallpaper, that is, pictures and images. Before that, I created a shape on the wallpaper with pen tool and filled it with white colour. The option for fill colour with pen tool can be found by right-clicking your mouse.

Again, I lowered the opacity of the shape. Then, I inserted a number of images within the shape area. This part will be a bit tricky and confusing but I will try to explain as clear as possible.
First, I put an image accordingly and I cropped the picture using rectangular selection tools and Ctrl + X to fit in well within the shape. Note that I increased the opacity of the shape. The reason why I increased the opacity is to allow full selection on the shape when using magic wand tool, which is the next step I used to fit the picture into the shape. After that, I right-clicked and chose the option 'Select Inverse' to make the selection went outside of the shape area.
Afterwards, I cropped the picture and the result looked like this:

I did some rendering on the picture so that it looked neat and tidy. Same process are used with the other pictures. Then, when I am done rendering all the pictures neatly, I merged the layers of all the images. Before I forgot, I used Blur tool for the leftmost pictures so that the picture, which is actually made up of 2 images, blend well with each other.

New layer is created and some lines are added to give out the dynamic feel on the wallpaper. Also, I used the special effect called 'outer glow' for the lines in which can be found by clicking the 'fx' button on the lower part of the layer panel. I did some adjustments on colour balance to make the image appeared warmer.

Next, I duplicated the layer containing the merged images, put it above the original one, clicked on filter -> blur -> gaussian blur and change the layer mode to Overlay. The images became quite nostalgic and warm looking.

Now that the images part are done, it's time to put some text on the wallpaper. I typed in 'Penang Dragon Boat fetisval at the left lower part of the wallpaper. Then, I manipulated the shape of the text to make it look interesting.
For the finishing touch, I lowered down the opacity of the background colour and voila! Oh yes, not to forget the flattening image part, this is how you do it:
Click on the button shown above and choose the option 'Flatten image'.

That is all for my e-wallpaper project. Until next time.
